Dog labs like this one were once common at US medical schools. Today, all but a handful of schools use superior nonanimal teaching methods. December 11th, 2011METI Learning with Human Patient Simulators
December 5th, 2011
For much of the 20th Century the mantra in US Medical Schools was see one, do one, teach one – as in, see one medical procedure, do one medical procedure, and then teach that same medical procedure. This philosophy was great, unless you happened to be the patient on the other end of the teaching process. METI Learning, located just off I-75 in Sarasota, has played a major role in changing how medical schools teach their students. METI, which is short for Medical Education Technologies Inc, manufactures and markets some of the most sophisticated human patient simulators in the world. Human Patient Simulator is a fancy term to describe a robot that can mimic human physiology. Today medical students in 90% of US Medical Schools train on METI robots that breath, blink, scream, and bleed. METI robots allow medical students to diagnose and treat a myriad of symptoms without risking patient safety. The technology behind METI was first developed at the University of Florida College of Medicine by Dr. Joachim S. “Nik” Gravenstein – the late founder of UF’s Anesthesiology department. The University of Florida continues to receive royalties from METI for licensing the technology. METI’s two primary robots, MetiMan and iStan, are currently being used in 70 countries around the world. The US Military and the Canadian military also use METI robots to train emergency medical personnel in the treatment of battlefield injuries. According to CEO Michael Bernstein, 1000 METI robots “walked …
